2018 Walk MS Portland - Walk on the Wild Side PDX

Happy New Year! Every year Danielle and I participate in the Walk MS fundraising event. It’s something that we’ve done together for the past 9 years and will continue to do until a cure is found for this terrible disease.

This is a cause that we hold close to our hearts as we watch helplessly as Danielle’s Mom, Sandy, fights Multiple Sclerosis every day. Here is some information from the National MS Society’s website about Multiple Sclerosis:

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body…

The cause of MS is still unknown – scientists believe the disease is triggered by an as-yet-unidentified environmental factor in a person who is genetically predisposed to respond.

The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease.

According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms are different for every person affected by MS but here is a list of what a sufferer may have to endure:

  • Numbness or weakness in one or more limbs that typically occurs on one side of your body at a time, or the legs and trunk
  • Partial or complete loss of vision, usually in one eye at a time, often with pain during eye movement
  • Prolonged double vision
  • Tingling or pain in parts of your body
  • Electric-shock sensations that occur with certain neck movements, especially bending the neck forward (Lhermitte sign)
  • Tremor, lack of coordination or unsteady gait
  • Slurred speech
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Problems with bowel and bladder function

We walk for those who can no longer walk and for those who struggle to keep walking. Please donate what you can to help fund the search for a cure as well as other assistance programs that the National MS Society. If you can’t donate, please consider joining our team and being a virtual walker.

Make Strides Against Breast Cancer

Make Strides Against Breast Cancer

I’ve recently accepted a new position as Account Executive at SW Office Supply and Interior in Portland, OR. There I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Will Roth, a male breast cancer survivor. He invited me and our other colleagues to join the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides walk in Portland on October 14th, 2017. It was an event filled with strength and hope and it was a pleasure to attend and participate.

Check out Will’s team page here!
